Historical events of 1912...

My latest book A SHOP GIRL AT SEA releases a week tomorrow (April 9th) and its biggest inspiration was my wish to one day write a book set on the Titanic. Until this book, I hadn't found the right story to set aboard the fated ship but the idea of sending a member of Pennington's staff to America served as the perfect circumstance...

The sinking of the Titanic is arguably the biggest and saddest event of 1912 considering the number of people whose lives were lost and the universal shock of the end to the 'unsinkable'.

Yet, 1912 also saw several other momentous events:

Captain Robert Scott and his team reached the South Pole on 17th January - when a planned meeting with a dog team failed, Scott and his team died on the return trip.

Woodrow Wilson defeated former president Theodore Roosevelt to become America's 28th president.

In April, Harriet Quimby became the first female aviator to fly across the English Channel, then in July , Harriet was piloting a brand new two-seater Bleriot monoplane when it hit trouble and ejected both her and her flying companion, William A P Willard from the plane before crashing to the ground. Both Harriet and Willard were killed.

Year after year, celebrations and tragedies occur and I believe as a writer of historical fiction, it is part of my job to inform as well as entertain. Researching people's stories is my joy and including them in my books even more so. I doubt very much I will ever run out of inspiration...
