This week's Inspire Me! is all about the wonderful writer and Pulitzer prize winner, Toni Morrison.
I discovered Toni Morrison while watching Oprah interview her about twenty years ago - I was so moved by Morrison speaking about black history, slavery and the struggles of young girls, in particular, that I was desperate to read her books.
A trip to the local library followed that same day where I borrowed The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song Of Solomon and Tar Baby. As a bibliophile since childhood, and one who likes to read an author's books in order if possible, I relished these first four novels and finished reading them within a couple of weeks. I was moved, inspired, reduced to tears and laughter.
Toni Morrison is a writer of exemplary talent and sensitivity - a writer who brings her characters to life in such a way they become unforgettable to the reader. I now have every novel Morrison has ever written and they stand in pride of place on my living room shelves. I can still recollect scenes from each and every one of them.
For someone who reads a LOT of books, my memory of each novel and how long they have remained embedded in my consciousness is testament to just how deeply her words move me. I have made a personal vow to re-read each of her books this year, starting once more with The Bluest Eye...I recommend you do the same.
Happy Inspiration Day!
