This week's Inspire Me! feature is about a business woman probably better known in the US than here in the UK - the wonderfully inspiring, Mary Kay Ash.
Born in 1918 and married 17 years later, Mary Kay appears to have been a young woman who always intended to have a business of her own. While her husband served in the World War II, she earned money by selling books door to door.
After her divorce in 1945, Mary Kay married again and, now working as an employee, was passed over for promotion in favour of a man she'd trained. No doubt insulted and extremely frustrated, when she retired she intended to write a book aimed at helping women in business. From this book, came a business plan and, in 1963, Mary Kay started her own company, Mary Kay Cosmetics.
The business went from strength to strength and, before her death in 2001, she was honoured with the title of one of America's leading female entrepreneurs. Mary Kay Cosmetics continues to be a bestselling brand and, Mary Kay herself, an inspiration throughout America today. I love her message of making people feel important. Deep down, we all want to feel appreciated and validated - I truly believe that is entirely possible if we're willing to work hard and show up every day.
