Where Story Ideas Really Come From (And How to Find Yours)

One of the most common things I hear from new writers is this:

“I want to write a novel… but I don’t have an idea.”

And it can feel like such a big problem.

Because how can you start writing… if you don’t know what to write about?

But here’s the truth:

You don’t need a perfect, fully-formed idea to begin.
And more importantly… you probably already have the beginnings of one.

You just haven’t recognised it yet.

Story Ideas Don’t Appear Fully Formed

There’s a common belief that story ideas arrive as sudden flashes of inspiration — clear, complete, and ready to write.

But for most writers, that’s not how it works at all.

Story ideas are usually:

  • Small
  • Messy
  • Incomplete
  • Easy to dismiss

They might look like:

  • A “what if” question
  • A moment from your own life
  • A character you can’t stop thinking about
  • A setting that lingers in your mind

On their own, they don’t feel like enough.

But they are the starting point.

Where Story Ideas Actually Come From

If you’re waiting for the perfect idea, you might be overlooking the places ideas naturally grow.

Here are a few to consider:

Everyday Life

Conversations, memories, small moments — these often hold the emotional core of a story.

Books, Films, and TV

Not to copy, but to notice what draws you in:

  • Themes
  • Relationships
  • Conflicts

History

Real events, time periods, and untold stories can spark powerful ideas.

Personal Curiosity

What are you naturally drawn to?
What questions do you keep asking?

The Real Skill: Expanding an Idea

The problem usually isn’t that you don’t have ideas, it's that you don’t yet know how to develop them.

A simple idea becomes a story when you begin to ask:

  • What if this went wrong?
  • Who would this matter to most?
  • What’s at stake?
  • How could this change someone’s life?

This is where your story starts to take shape.

You Don’t Need to Feel “Ready”

Another thing that keeps writers stuck?

Waiting to feel ready.

But clarity doesn’t come before you start. It comes when you start.

Your first idea doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to be enough to begin.

If You’re Still Feeling Stuck…

If you’re reading this and thinking:

“This all makes sense… but I still don’t know where to start”

You’re not alone.

Sometimes you just need a little structure — something to guide your thinking and help you connect the dots.

A Gentle Next Step

That’s exactly why I created my Where Stories Begin workbook.

It’s designed to help you:

  • Discover story ideas in places you might not expect
  • Explore different sources of inspiration
  • Turn small sparks into real story concepts

So instead of waiting for inspiration…
you can start building it.
