Welcome to part 2 of my current blog series - Where Do You Get Your Ideas From?
This week I'm sharing the inspiration behind the second book in the Shop Girl series, A SHOP GIRL GETS THE VOTE - now, it won't come as any surprise that this book was, of course, was ultimately inspired by the incredible women who fought for the Vote in the Edwardian era. However, the heroine Esther Stanbury was inspired by a combination of wonderful characters from different period dramas I have loved over the years.
She was inspired by Angus Towler in Mr Selfridge who becomes a window dresser, the fabulous Maud Watts in the movie Suffragette (played by the equally fabulous Carey Mulligan) and the caring character of Anna in Downton Abbey. I do like my characters to be complex!
The story takes Esther from focused and career-driven, very much dedicated to the store's own Elizabeth Pennington to a woman who falls in love with a widow with two children whom she comes to adore - there are some scenes in this book (especially the suffragist action scenes) which remain some of the favourite I have ever written.
I hope you're tempted by Esther's story if you haven't already read it...
