One of the questions I am asked the most often is, 'Where do you get your ideas?'
I thought it might be fun to share with you where or how the nugget for each of my most recent books came from - how they were sparked and where I took that initial burst of inspiration. Hopefully, as a reader, you will enjoy discovering how my brain works and, if you are an aspiring writer too, you'll come to see that story ideas are all around us and there is no fear of ever running out!
So, let's kick things off with book 1 in my Shop Girl series, A SHOP GIRL IN BATH...
As this was the start of a brand new series, the initial idea to write a series set in an Edwardian department store came from my enjoyment and love of the TV shows Mr Selfridge and The Paradise, but there was also something missing for me in these shows. I was desperate to follow the women more closely. Get involved in their personal lives, their pasts, their hopes and dreams...and so I soon landed on the series theme of female empowerment.
In A SHOP GIRL IN BATH, I introduce heroine Elizabeth Pennington who (as the book opens) is battling with her aging/out of date father to take over the running of Pennington's, Bath's finest department store. The idea for Elizabeth was inspired by the strong business women I follow on Instagram, women who have chased their dreams and built businesses from the bottom up. Elizabeth came to me with a vision of a new modern decade so I purposely opened the book in 1910.
When at last the store becomes hers, Elizabeth steps into her own and is determined to bring Pennington's shop girls with her - they will have opportunity, be empowered and thrive both personally and professionally. As for love? Elizabeth is more surprised than anyone by master glove maker Joseph Carter when he walks into Pennington's determined to showcase his wonderful creations...

1910 – A compelling tale of
female empowerment in Bath's leading department store. Perfect for the fans of
the TV series Mr Selfridge and The Paradise.
Elizabeth Pennington should be the rightful heir of Bath's
premier department store through her enterprising schemes and dogged hard work.
Her father, Edward Pennington, believes his daughter lacks the business acumen
to run his empire and is resolute a man will succeed him.
Determined to break from her father's iron-clad hold and
prove she is worthy of inheriting the store, Elizabeth forms an unlikely
alliance with ambitious and charismatic master glove-maker Joseph Carter.
United they forge forward to bring Pennington's into a new decade, embracing
woman's equality and progression whilst trying not to mix business and
pleasure.
Can this dream team thwart Edward Pennington's plans for the store? Or will Edward prove himself an unshakeable force who will ultimately ruin both Elizabeth and Joseph?
