What authors inspire me or influence my work is often a question that I'm asked so I thought I'd share my top two and why...
1) Julia London (https://julialondon.com/)
I first discovered Julia's books several years ago when I stumbled across a copy of The Trouble With Honor which is the first novel in the Cabot Sisters trilogy. I absolutely loved it! The story, the characters, the humour and non-stop pace had me turning the pages and reaching for the next book as soon as I'd finished the one before.
Since then I've read the Royal Wedding books and more besides...
As much as Julia inspires me, I'd say my books are different than hers in many ways including the settings, the class of characters and the general tone but it's not those things that her writing inspires in me. It's the page turning quality, the exquisite dialogue and characterisation.
If you want a good historical romance, reach for Julia London, you won't be disappointed!
2) Margaret Mitchell (Author of Gone With The Wind)
Now, you might ask how Margaret Mitchell can inspire me when she only wrote one novel (as far as we know) but it's the length, breadth and depth of that novel that inspires me every time I read it and I have read and re-read it at least 5 times!
It is my absolute dream to one day to write an epic novel like Gone With The Wind that spans decades and is filled with a vast cast of characters with life-changing ups and downs, experiences, joy and heartbreak. For me, Mitchell's book is a masterclass in epic storytelling as well as showing how atmosphere, setting and characterisation can be skilfully used to evoke emotion and debate.
A wonderful book that I have no doubt will remain a favourite of mine for as long as I live!
Who are you favourite authors? What are you favourite books?
