Welcome Harlequin author, Regan Black...

1. What was your first job? Did you like or dislike it? Why?

My very first job, at the age of eleven, was cleaning house once a week for an elderly neighbour. She was a lovely woman, but very particular about housework. Occasionally, I still hear her voice in my head when I vacuum reminding me that shorter, more compact passes over the carpet are most effective. LOL. I learned a great deal from the experience and I enjoyed earning money and I seeing the clean house as an immediate result of my efforts, but I knew becoming a full-time housekeeper wouldn’t be a long-term career choice for me.

2. Do you have a pet peeve? If so what is it?
Oh, goodness, there are probably dozens of things that irritate me on any given day, from our small grey cat hiding in the shadows like a landmine waiting to prove I still can’t levitate, to the fact that I’m rarely allowed to touch the television remote in the evenings when my husband is home.

3. Would you describe your style as shabby chic, timeless elegance, eclectic, country or ____?

My decorating style leans toward casual or cottage with a hefty dose of ‘lived-in’ and whatever makes the dog and cats happy. We’re laid back around here, which is one reason why I love perusing decorating sites when I’m planning characters. If the house were styled to perfection, it would be done with an easy, modern cottage feel. (Though if the house were perfectly styled we probably wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves.)

4. Tell me about your book A Stranger She Can Trust and where you got your inspiration for it?

A Stranger She Can Trust is the second stand-alone novel within the Escape Club Heroes story world. Originally this series grew from the idea of first responders coping with various challenges on the job, or difficulties that put them off the job for a time. The night club itself is owned by a former police officer who had to retire after being wounded in the line of duty, but he can’t quite stop helping people in need - both first responders and within the community at large.
Firefighters have held a special place in my heart since they saved our home during a New Year’s Eve party when I was a kid. They risked nasty, icy roads and showed tremendous patience with a few obstinate guests who refused to vacate as ordered - determined not to miss a single play of the football game that was on TV that night.
A Stranger She Can Trust is really a story about how we intuitively know who to trust in those moments when it seems all is lost.

5. Who is your role model? Why?

I’m not sure I have just one role model. I believe my father was my first role model. The man had a gift for motivating and encouraging people to reach for their biggest dreams. There are several authors I admire, Clive Cussler, Debra Webb, and Nora Roberts to name only a few, for their prolific production and consistent quality. There are athletes such as Serena Williams and Roger Federer who inspire me by their exemplary dedication, commitment, and fighting spirit to become the best in their fields.

6. How much of your book is realistic?

In every book, I do my best to make the setting as alive as possible and really immerse the reader in a sense of place. I loved the research for Philadelphia and particularly the Philadelphia Museum of Art in this story. It’s fascinating to me searching out the local quirks and fun details that add a sense of authenticity to the story world.

7. What are your ambitions for your writing career?

Shortly after my first book sold, I made quite a lengthy list of short and long term goals but it all boils down to one primary intention: to keep writing stories, each one better than the last, and provide readers with a marvellous escape from the daily grind. Books were my escape hatch as a child and continue to be my preferred source of inspiration and relaxation and I hope to give readers stories that offer that same exciting, adventuresome experience.

8. Share one fact about yourself that would surprise people.

Thanks to my grandmother’s patient instruction when I was a curious kid, I’ve made just about everything you can imagine with a crochet hook using various techniques. There have been innumerable baby blankets, hats, booties and sweaters along with stuffed animals, toss pillows, scarves, afghans, purses, wall art, and rag rugs.
But I can’t knit to save my life. ;)

EXCERPT

“Would you like us to take you home or call a friend or family member for you?” Grant asked.

A fresh bolt of panic shot through her like white-hot lightning streaking through a dark sky. The sensation left her gasping. She knew what they were asking. She knew what it meant to call someone. She just couldn’t remember the numbers or names that would connect her to someone familiar. The concept of family made her feel marginally better and a thousand times worse, though the word didn’t induce quite as much dread as friend did. Alexander was the name on the matchbook, and Grant and Carson were here and had been kind to her. Those three names were the extent of her world.

She wanted answers as much as the men asking the questions.

“No. I guess not.” She studied the man named Grant sitting behind his desk. The hard jaw and thick build gave off an air of no-nonsense toughness, but his warm brown gaze didn’t induce any fear, and the gray hair salting his temples added a trust factor.

“I can’t tell you where I live. I mean, I don’t know the answer.” She fisted her hands in frustration, and her short fingernails bit into her palms. “I don’t know who to call. The names…” Her breath rattled in and out of her chest. How could her head feel so full and empty at the same time? “The names are just gone,” she finished in a hoarse whisper.
