Welcome fellow agency writer, JoAnn Smith Ainsworth...

1)  What kind of music do you like?

Classical…if I had a chance to reincarnate, I’d come back as a soprano in a major opera company. Their voices are trained and tuned like a musical instrument. I get great enjoyment from it.

2)  Describe your dream home…

One that keeps me and mine safe and healthy, while enclosing lots of love inside its walls.

3)  Favorite literary hero & heroine?

Again, I go for the classics…Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

4)  What are you reading now?

I’m reading Alfred Hitchcock magazine’s short-story mysteries to clear my mind and relax.

5)  What did you do on your last birthday?

I toured San Francisco in a Porche boxter at night with the top down. All my life I wanted a ride in a Porche. A friend of a friend made it happen last year.

6)  What comes first, plot or characters?

I write historicals and I craft a book in this order:  location, time period, characters, plot.

7)  Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?

Hardly ever, but I suffer greatly from “I don’t have enough time and energy” block.

8)  Do you ever want to be someone else? Who?

No. I’m happy to be me. If I could incorporate part of someone else’s life into mine, I wouldn’t mind trying out the Queen’s crown jewels for a few weeks.

9)  Tell us about your latest book?

EXPECT TROUBLE (a romantic paranormal thriller) is the first book in the Operation Delphi series. In it, the U.S. govt. recruits five psychics to locate Nazi spies on the East Coast during WWII.

This is the first manuscript written with a series in mind at the beginning. The other series books happened after the first manuscript was written. I found EXPECT TROUBLE a challenge. Names, places, circumstances had to be thought out as to how they could and would expand and grow in future manuscripts.

Also, the love between the clairvoyant U.S. WAVES lieutenant and the skeptical naval commander arcs over the three books of the series. Being used to writing so that the romantic involvement is resolved within one manuscript, it’s been a challenge to feed in just enough and not too much. The romantic ARC needs to change and grow over the three books even though the external plot resolves itself at the end of each book in the series.

Blurb

Opening herself to ridicule by revealing she’s clairvoyant is the last thing U.S. WAVE Livvy Delacourt wants, but when Uncle Sam (in the guise of a skeptical, but handsome naval commander) needs her skill to track Nazi spies, she jumps in with both feet.

Join this emotional journey through paranormal realms of fast-paced suspense and supernatural battles as U.S. Navy psychics pit themselves against their Nazi counterparts.

10) What’s next for you?

My Work in Progress is EXPECT DECEPTION. In it, a spy experimenting with the black arts challenges the Delphi psychic team. Here’s its pitch:

Just when U.S. WAVE Delacourt thinks she finally has this Nazi spy chase thing under control, Hitler’s wizard adds a minor demon to the mix.

Skeptical naval commander Drew doesn’t believe in things he can’t touch, but when assigned to lead a psychic team, he’s forced into experiencing unseen planes.

Wizard Daryl Fergus was flattered when Hitler tapped him to disrupt U.S. war readiness, but he’s stretched to the max by unexpectedly formidable Navy psychics.

JoAnn Smith Ainsworth Bio

When JoAnn Smith Ainsworth carried wood as a pre-teen so her Great Aunt Martha could stoke up the iron stove to prepare dinner, she wasn’t thinking, “I could use this in a novel someday.” Yet, the skills she learned from her horse-and-buggy ancestors translate into backdrops for her historical romance and paranormal suspense novels. JoAnn’s debut medieval romantic suspense novels received 4 stars from RT Book Reviews. Of her historical western romances released fall 2013, one reader said, “seamlessly, flawless writing.” Another said, “WOW, it was amazing! There was fun, excitement, adventure and so well put as a love story.” Her paranormal thriller, EXPECT TROUBLE, released May 2014. She is represented by Agent Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency.
