EXCERPTS (Exclusive Excerpt):

Gordon pulled his uniform shirt out of his belt, unsnapped it, and tossed it aside. He yanked his undershirt off over his head. The birthmark went down the left side of his neck, over his shoulder and stopped right above his nipple. He kicked off his boots, unbuckled his belt, shucked his pants, and then turned a circle in front me. The coffee colored stain flowed over his shoulder blade and spread over most of his back. It disappeared under the waistband of his underwear and emerged to cover his entire left leg. “I’m ugly. A freak. What woman could ever want this?”

All the times I had told Gordon I loved him, his ears heard me, but his heart refused to believe. His heart was convinced he was unlovable and the heart rules. The bars of Gordon’s cage weren’t made of iron—they were stronger than that. He was trapped by years of scorn, fear of rejection, self-loathing, and the solitary life those things had driven him to.

His shoulders trembled as he fought to master himself, struggled not to cry in front of me. I could unlock his cage. What’s more, I had the power to destroy it. I could free him.

I picked my way carefully through the broken glass. Gordon turned away when I reached him. I firmly turned him back. He stood, head down and ashamed of himself, of the way nature had made him. I traced my fingers down his stained cheek, the side of neck, and across his chest. His skin pebbled under my touch. I continued the caress down his arm to his hand and pulled gently. He allowed me to lead him down the hall.

In his room, I pushed him down on the bed. He fell onto it, too distraught to resist. He put an arm over his face. I moved to turn

off the lights, but left them on instead. When I pulled his arm down, he immediately put his face into the pillow.

“Look at me.”

It took a long time, and I didn’t think he would. Finally he did, warily, as if expecting me to run screaming from the room when the marked cheek was revealed.

“I want you, Gordon Wolfe.”

Gordon had shown me what was under his shirt; now I showed him what was under mine. His touch was hesitant and uncertain, but soon grew bold and assertive. He was large and powerful and gentle beyond words. I introduced him to the mechanics of sex, which was all I had previously known. By the time the morning sun streamed across the bed, Gordon was teaching me the vast difference between having sex and making love.

I was terrified of falling in love. Gordon was terrified no one would ever love him. What a pair we made.
