THE CAD OR THE DAD? WHICH DO WE PREFER?
Rachel, darlin’, thanks for having me on your blog today. I always enjoy chatting with your readers. So, let’s hop right into the topic of discussion, shall we? I’m going to talk about types of men…oh, and aren’t they such delicious creatures?

But what kind of men do we prefer?

I was alone for ten years after my divorce. I had a lot of time to think about what I desired in a mate. After all, the first attempt hadn’t worked out so well, so I was fifty-nine shades beyond apprehensive about getting involved with another man. Slowly, over the years, I composed a male shopping list.

Dare I share?

I wanted an intelligent man, humorous, sharing the same belief system as I, family oriented, conservative in his spending habits, loyal (spelled: faithful), someone who loved to read and who enjoyed spending time with me. I wanted him tall, broad shouldered, able to quote Shakespeare in the shower and hung like John Wayne’s horse. Not a bad list. Right?

This time around, I was going for the “dad.” I’d already had the “cad.” You know the type. Dangerous. Dark. Deadly good looks. They’re full of sweet promises, smooth moves and sensual talent. But, they can’t stick…to a job, to one woman, to their promises.

Calvin, my husband, and I often talk about women who prefer the cad over the dad. The dangerous dude who knows how to charm or sham a woman. While the nice guy, the one who lives up to his responsibilities, is often ignored by the woman he’s pursuing. I suppose this is uppermost in my mind right now. My son, a teacher and musician with two Masters degrees, was tossed aside by his wife for a guy who hasn’t worked in two years. I can’t grasp it. She’s beautiful, educated and vice president of one of the largest banks in the world. So, why?

Why did she choose the cad over the dad?

Calvin says the element of danger turns women on. I can get that. We all like the excitement of it. But does it overrule our common sense?

My younger son lives by a creed. One he’s trying to pound into my recently divorced son’s head. “If you want a woman to stick with you, treat a lady like a slut and a slut like a lady. Either way, the woman will fall all over you.”
Surely this isn’t so.

In my novella, BACK WHERE YOU BELONG, Tyler Desmond is a dad—a single dad with a thirteen-year old daughter. He’s more than a little wary about getting involved again.
Here’s the blurb:

While shooting pool at the Lonesome Steer Honky Tonk, rancher Tyler Desmond takes an errant dart in the neck. Ready to retaliate, he’s instead captivated by the blonde who threw it. Tyler isn’t interested in opening his heart, so why does he kiss the verbal buzz saw? Just to shut her up?

As a teenager, Lacy LaRoche had a secret crush on Tyler. When the dart brings them face-to-face, all she can do is chatter—until he kisses her. But Lacy didn’t come back to Texas to fall in love. She’s hiding another secret: her roommate surreptitiously videotaped Lacy undressing and posted it on the internet.

When Tyler’s daughter is bullied at school, Lacy must reveal the truth and face the emotional damage of cyberbullying. Over-protective of his daughter—and his heart—Tyler must learn to trust again. Can two scarred hearts find their way back to where they belong?

An Excerpt:
When Tyler found her a couple minutes later, she was standing at the vanity in the bathroom, holding a tube of Neosporin and crying. Oh, crap, more embarrassment.
“Hey.” He turned her and enveloped her in his arms. “What’s all this about? Don’t cry.”
She pulled back and gazed at him. “I…I’m sorry I hurt you. I wanted this morning to be perfect.”
“Ain’t nothing perfect. Take us, for instance. Since you stepped back into my life, I’ve been stabbed with a dart, pole-axed by a kiss, peed on and burnt.”
“I don’t know why I’m like this around you. I don’t like it one bit.”
“I’m not overly fond of it either.” He took the tube from her hand and removed the cap. “When my ex-wife left me, I swore I was through with women. Nothing but pain comes from them.” He rubbed ointment over his burn as he talked. “Pain and a quick grope under the table.” He smirked when he handed her back the Neosporin.
“Now, that was a mistake, just like all the other things that’s happened.”
His eyes twinkled and he chuckled. “You’re like a walking blonde catastrophe. I figure you owe me.”
“What? What do I owe you?”
He took her chin between his thumb and fingers and drew her face closer. “A kiss. One that will right my world again, ‘cause it’s been out of kilter since the first one at the Lonesome Steer. I’m beginning to think that dart had some kind of poison on it to put me under your spell.”
“That’s nonsense.”
His gentle kisses over her eyes and cheeks erased her tears.
“No more crying, only smiles. You’ve got a smile that warms my heart.”
“I do?” No one had ever told her that before.
Large hands settled at her waist, and little by little he inclined his head to hers, his voice barely a whisper. “Oh, yeah.” Then his lips made contact and nuked every cell of her being.
Oh. My. God.

  3. Great post Vonnie, we all like a little bit of a bad boy, if only they grew up when the woman did.

    1. Thanks, Mary. Sadly some men don't grow up in a few areas and they don't seem to care who they hurt in the process of their living their lives their way.

  4. Enjoyed the post, Vonnie. I vote for a combo of the dad and cad - someone who is responsible but still knows that life is too short to worry. Is there such a man?

    1. I hope, Ashantay. My youngest, the one with the wild concept of how to snare a women, is like that. He's married now and has changed his views on how to treat his lady. They travel a lot and are always up to something...and both pamper the other. But many are one way or the other. Very few are a nice blend.

  5. Hi Vonnie,
Great blog. Women are strange creatures when it comes to chosing men. I write about ruthless, dark and tortured heroes, but in real life I went for a trustworthy, honest and hard working man, and never regretted it.

    cheers

  6. I like the idea of making a male shopping list. Though divorce is rampant, it's still bad to know that marriages are ruined and children are hurt. May I ask what happened between you and your ex-hubby? Was it about his attitude or habits that you decided to end up with divorce?
