 Excerpt:

"A wee lady as yourself could not possibly have such dreaded enemies." Yet somehow he sensed she did. He had heard the thunder of hooves, seen the ashen color upon her face and understood Whipple's desperation to keep her hidden. He could even understand her need to flee. Courageously, she'd chosen to stay.

Courage or foolishness, he wondered.

Her shoulders quivered and he was suddenly once again obsessed with a driving desire to protect her. He reached out to touch her but drew back his hand.

He wanted nothing more than to shield her from harm and the evil--anyone including himself--might bring to her doorstep.

"I should leave," he said, knowing he could not leave her to fend for herself when he wanted to fight battles for her. "Something happened to you out there."

She leaned against the cupboards in front of her, visibly shaken by his statement. "Nay, nothing happened." Yet her words were barely perceptible in the thin air.

"Do not deny what is so obvious."

Her eyes were wide when she turned to him, shaking her head. "You speak of magical charms and seeing things which are not there."

"I see nothing that isn't as plain as the expression on your face." She caught her lip beneath her upper teeth. Still, he knew she meant to deny his words, deny her fear which was tangible. And, if not for her dreams, he might very well be a dead man.

"You know not what you speak of."

"Then tell me."
