Welcome Rogue Phoenix Press author, Genie Gabriel...

Hi, Genie! Welcome to my site and thank you for inviting me to be a part of your ongoing book tour. I hope you enjoy your time with me and my visitors and we all make you feel welcome. As this is the first time we've met, I am looking forward to learning more about you and your writing...let's get on with the questions!

1)            What is your writing routine?

Depends on my dogs, who run my household. The "routine" usually goes something like this: get up, let the dogs outside and feed them, then write for several hours while the dogs nap. In the afternoon, it's time to feed the dogs again before I check e-mail and blogs, do promotion and work on other projects. This varies depending on what else is happening in my life and what else comes up. "Flexible" is usually my middle name and sometimes my first!

2)            Which author/s inspire you to write?

Not so much a particular author, but hearing about any author's writing journey. They are all different but inspiring. Also, conferences with a lot of speakers sharing ideas are wonderful. I always come home jazzed and ready to write.

 3)            Which is your favorite romance subgenre to read? To write?

I read a lot of romance subgenres, as long as they have a good story and a happy ending. My writing leans toward contemporary women's fiction with a strong romance and elements of mystery/suspense, humor, action, and adventure. The heat levels vary, depending on the characters. Like what I read, I strive to write a good story with a happily-ever-after ending.

 4)            How do you deal with criticism/rejection?

Depends on how it's delivered, but a decadent dessert is always called for! Harsh criticism or rejection is fairly easy to ignore, as I figure the person is unhappy for some reason and taking it out on others. With constructive criticism, I take a thoughtful look to see if there's something I can learn or if it will indeed make my story better. If so, I incorporate the suggestion. If not, I simply shrug it off.

 5)            What do you expect from an editor?

My stories are pretty clean when they go to my editor. So I just expect an editor to tell me if there are places that don't make sense; i.e., if I've assumed the readers know as much about my characters as I do because it's in my head or the opposite--if I've put in too much information.

 6)            Tell me about your latest release

LEGACY OF ANGELS is the second book in my LEGACY series about a small-town family
who deals with tough issues like stolen babies and exploding buildings. In LEGACY OF ANGELS, two tarnished angels--a former priest and a former prostitute--risk their lives to save a baby from a beast-man's savage vengeance.

 7)            Which is your favorite character in the book?  Why?

I love all the characters--well, perhaps not the beast-man so much. :) An easy favorite is the little boy, Todd, who is at the center of uncovering a baby-selling ring. Todd shows off when he's the center of attention, throws a tantrum when he doesn't get what he wants, is adorable and is brave in his own way.

 8) What are you working on right now?

Edits to the fifth book of the LEGACY series, which reveals secrets and surprises of the adoptive mom. After that, there are at least four more books in the series.

 9) Your biggest piece of advice to aspiring novelists?

Generally, don't listen to advice. :) If suggestions seem helpful, adapt them to fit your particular situation, and don't worry about the rest.

 10) Where can readers find you?

Thank you, Rachel, for having me as a guest, and thanks to all who stopped by to comment!

 EXCERPT

"I'm not safe anywhere." Terror beat in Claudia deGras' heart, pulsed through her veins, shut down any rational thought. Get out of here!

She bolted toward the door, not daring to look back as the sound of heavy footsteps followed her.

The old brown sedan sitting in the driveway always had the keys in the ignition. Most of the time, it started without much protest.

Claudia flung open the door and cranked the key. The engine caught and roared as she shoved the accelerator to the floor. Two doors banged shut as the old Buick slid sideways on the gravel, then found traction on the pavement.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Patrick O'Shea on the wide bench seat beside her, his hand braced against the dashboard for balance, but his face reflected his normal serenity.

Could she trust him? Did she have a choice? And where was she going?

She eased her foot off the accelerator and settled the old sedan into a speed that wouldn't get them stopped by the police, though patrols were rare on this sparsely traveled road in Eastern Oregon.

While she drove the highway in silence, the childhood memories of curses and shouting and fists landing heavy blows on her body receded, and her panicked mind calmed down.

No one had harmed her today. In fact, over the last few weeks the O'Shea siblings, including Patrick, had rearranged their lives to protect her from the man-beast who stalked her.

She shivered.

The man-beast was the real danger.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

For years I've been fascinated by the puzzle of why some people collapse under life's traumas and others emerge triumphantly stronger. These triumphs of the human spirit over the ugliest of adversities became the basis for my stories. Yet my dramatic stories have always contained touches of humor, and sometimes I have great fun writing romantic comedy novellas. However, in all my stories, my passion for writing romance is an outlet for the powerful messages that people can overcome great difficulties, and true love can turn life’s heartaches into happily ever after.

  2. I really admire your ability to shrug off any unpleasant comments. This is so necessary. I love the sound of this series. It really sounds like something I would like to read. If a book is good, I want to keep on reading so I love series.

    1. Hi, MomJane! Sometimes shrugging off unpleasant comments takes longer than other times. LOL! For me, it was a skill learned by life experiences. As the saying goes, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger--or more thick skinned. :)

So good to see you again!

    1. Hi, Catherine! Ah, decadent desserts...what are some of your favorite places?

Konditorei here in Salem is incredible. And earlier this year I discovered Moonstruck Chocolates--definitely heavenly. And in Corvallis (also in Oregon) there's Market of Choice, a wonderful store with cakes that taste so rich it's like candy in every bite. Yum!

Thank you also for the reminder of Memorial Day, that gives us a chance to remember and honor the men and women who have died in service to our country as well as others special to us.

    1. Hi, Vivien! Sometimes we can handle much more than we think we can.

I've seen that many times in "real" life, and that inner core of strength is one of the themes I love to write about. Claudia, the heroine in LEGACY OF ANGELS, is a great example of growing from a traumatic past to find courage she didn't know she possessed. How's that for yet another teaser? LOL!

      So glad you stopped by!

  9. Hi Genie, Sorry to see the last day of your tour arrive. It has been fun meeting you and learning about your work.

One last question for you: What characters are the hardest/easiest for you to write: The hero, the heroine, the villain (or villainess), the secondary male & female characters? What are the most fun to write?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi, Karen! So good to see you again!

What a loaded question about writing characters!

Characters who are the hardest to write aren't necessarily in a specific role like hero/heroine, villain, etc. But ones who won't talk to me. The hero in THE BODYGUARD--the book that introduced the LEGACY series characters--refused to share his thoughts and secrets with me until late in the book. Once I realized he was the "strong, silent type," who took action rather than talked about things, writing his character became much easier.

So, of course, the easiest characters to write are those who share their thoughts with me--often so rapidly I have to type really fast to keep up with what they are revealing.

The O'Shea siblings in my LEGACY series have been pretty forthcoming with their thoughts, so their stories have unfolded quite nicely. But I've "lived" with this family for several years while I've been working on this series.

And most fun could be secondary characters, because they can be a little quirkier or more blunt-spoken. For instance, the cantankerous rancher in LEGACY OF ANGELS with a soft spot for his teenaged granddaughter who wants to run away from home.

Karen, I hope you join my next tour in July for the third book of my LEGACY series!

  11. I completely agree that some rejection/criticism is easier to handle if given a certain way but it always deserves a nice sweet dessert to heal the hurt of rejection.

  15. I always find that a decadent dessert can work wonders. You must work extremely hard if your books are 'pretty clean' when they go to the editor. Thank you for the excerpt.
